HUSH PUPPY USER GUIDE

INTRODUCTION:
Congratulations, your choice of the HUSH PUPPY sonic bark control collar demonstrates your concern for your pet's well being. Of the many electronic bark control devices available today, only the Hush Puppy series of trainers uses a humane, painless tone to teach your dog to stop barking. In time, this mild but persistent stimulus will teach your pet to break the nuisance barking habit without pain, shock or needless trauma.

The Hush Puppy's SONIC bark control method has been proven effective and is the overwhelming choice of pet care professionals and experts in the field of canine behaviour and training. In fact, some local authorities, have now mandated that the HUSH PUPPY be used as the first remedy in nuisance barker court cases, in the interest of finding a truly humane and effective solution.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION:
Each time your dog barks the Hush Puppy emits a short, audible tone. You will also hear the tone since it has been shown that the most effective tone is in the range of human and animal hearing (not ultrasonic). The tone sounds like a soft beep. It may seem quite mild to you (and your dog) at first but, be patient. In a relatively short time, your pet will learn to associate the tone with its own barking. Eventually, your dog will find the tone annoying and will become increasingly selective about barking.

Remember, because of the very humane and painless approach used by the Hush Puppy, it will take time to work. But, it does work effectively! Don't expect to see your dog become startled or show any notable reaction to the tone at first. The tone is not painful and it will take some time for your pet to learn the cause and effect relationship between barking and the sounding of the tone. The amount of time required varies widely from pet to pet but, expect at least a couple of weeks for your pet to learn that it is its own barking that sounds the tone. It may then take several weeks longer for the barking habit to be diminished or eliminated.

Used correctly and given the proper amount of time to work, you will be delighted with the Hush Puppy's effectiveness and you will be proud of the fact that you had the care and patience to use a bark control device that worked without causing pain or harm to your pet.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:
Before putting your Hush Puppy on your pet there are a few things about the unit with which you should become familiar. The Hush Puppy uses a microphone to sense your dog's bark. The microphone is located at the centre of the unit underneath the strap as shown in the diagram below. The microphone will easily sense the sound of your dog's bark right through the strap. You will also notice a small hole on the side of the unit. This is the location of the speaker, which sounds the correction tones. The two output level control dials on the base are for A) mic or input sensitivity (right with mic below)and B) output level (left). These are factory set for optimum performance but can be adjusted by the user. Care must be taken to turn them gently and they are capable of making only 1 revolution.

INSTALLING / REPLACING THE BATTERY:
To access the battery compartment, firmly push down on the engraved area of the plastic case and slide the battery door open as shown in the next diagram

Install the new battery and be sure to place the battery with the connector at the top (speaker end) of the battery compartment. Installing the battery upside down may make it difficult to reopen the battery door.

BATTERY DOOR:
Replace the battery door. When slid into place it should snap shut. Normal battery life is three to four months. Replace the battery when the tone becomes notably softer or stops all together.

OUTPUT LEVEL CONTROL:
This adjustment controls the amount of time the tone is applied. We recommend that you leave this adjustment at its maximum level, which is factory preset in the fully clockwise position. Once your dog has definitely corrected its barking, you may wish to shorten the amount of time the tone stays on by turning this adjustment screw counter clockwise (CAUTION: BE CAREFUL NOT TO APPLY TOO MUCH FORCE AND DO NOT OVER-TURN THE ADJUSTMENT SCREW).

INTRUDER BARKING FEATURE:
As remarkable as it sounds, your HUSH PUPPY is designed with circuitry that will not trigger on the more rapid intruder and alarm type of barking. Here's how it works. You will note that after your dog barks, the HUSH PUPPY waits about one quarter of a second until the beep is activated. If, in this quarter of a second, your dog barks again, the HUSH PUPPY forgets about the first bark and begins waiting its one quarter of a second again. Therefore, if your dog is barking very rapidly, as is typical when barking at an intruder or other event which your dog considers an emergency, the HUSH PUPPY beeps only once after the barking chain has broken. This feature is provided so as not to punish your dog for being a good watchdog.

PUTTING THE HUSH PUPPY ON YOUR DOG:
Place the unit around your dog's neck and adjust the collar length using the slide buckle arrangement provided with the strap. The unit should fit snugly yet, comfortably underneath your dog's neck.

CAUTION NOTES:
1, Do not allow your dog to chew this collar. You should also attempt to minimize scratching or clawing at the casing.
2. This device is made up of plastic and electronic components that are not digestible. Consult your local Vet if your dog swallows any part of this product.
3. The collar is not intended for use as a restraining collar. If you are using a leash, use it with a separate restraining type of collar.
4. Although the Hush Puppy's microprocessor is designed to distinguish between your dog's individual bark and other noises, the unit may occasionally be activated by other vibrations or sounds. This is normal, but it should not happen so often as to be confusing to your pet. If the unit is falsely triggered by excessive scratching, shaking of the head or rolling on the ground, your pet may be suffering from fleas or ear-mites. If these activities are evident, have your pet checked by a vet for parasites.
5. The Hush Puppy is designed to be water resistant, but is not fully immersable. It's okay to let your dog wear the unit in the rain but, be sure to remove it before bathing your pet or allowing it to swim. If the device gets very wet or submerged in water, remove the battery and allow the unit to dry completely for at least a couple of days. Install a new battery before using.
